Ocean Springs, Mississippi is an active town with a lot to offer. There are great coffee shops, bakeries, fine dining restaurants, barbeque joints… and there’s Belgican’s, for your serious french fry craving. And now with three locations, you can get a “fry-fix” no matter where you are on the Mississippi Coast.
I love when I have time to hand cut and fry my own potatoes at home, but let’s be honest, that almost never happens. Belgican’s is a great alternative to get the real deal. At Belgican’s, potatoes are hand cut daily, and they are twice fried to give a crispier texture. The toppings are out of this world, creating combinations that make fries into a full meal, and the sauces are made from scratch in their own kitchen.
The Story of Belgican’s
I recently met Luc, the owner, and he explained how the idea of Belgican’s was born. He is from Belgium, and he missed the fries he grew to love there. His wife is a Biloxi native and prefers her home cooked fries. Together, they developed Belgican’s (Belgian + American) fries and turned them into a business. Quality is of utmost importance to them, and they involve their family in the day-to-day operations of their business. Luc’s passion for potatoes is something special. I toured their kitchen, tasted their sauces and watched their process of fry making, and trust me, their passion is evident.
Belgican’s fries really are a different variety. The center is moist and the outside is extra crispy. They actually stay crispy for some time. I decided to try their three best sellers: Loaded Fries, Surf and Turf Fries, and Roast Beef and Gravy Fries.
The Loaded Fries were my personal favorite. Who doesn’t love cheddar, bacon, sour cream and chives on potatoes?! Maybe it’s just that I rarely treat myself to such an old favorite. They were a treat! The Surf and Turf Fries were loaded with small cajun-seasoned Gulf shrimp, Philly steak and Philly sauce. Definitely unique. Next, I had the Roast Beef and Gravy Fries. They slow cook their roast beef and slice it thin, then top it with brown gravy and a creamy house-made onion sauce. Yum! I loved the creamy onion sauce. Did I mention that they make all of their own sauces in house?
